I Packed for the Beach. Europe Said No, Ma’am.
Not gonna lie — I packed for this trip like I was headed to a beach resort. Three sundresses. Three swimsuits. A cute little raffia tote swinging on my arm like I was about to do a boardwalk photoshoot.
And then we landed. Rome was giving jacket weather. A few of our other stops were even cooler. And me? Cold-natured to my core, standing there in a tank top like I made a choice.
So let’s talk about it — what I actually packed for spring in Europe, what I wish I’d packed instead, and the one bag swap that saved my sanity.
The Forecast I Should Have Checked
Here’s where I messed up: I packed for the season’s reputation, not the actual weather. “Spring in Europe” sounds like sundress weather. It is not always sundress weather. Some mornings in Rome had me wishing for a real jacket, and that cool stretch followed us into a couple other countries on the trip too.
I know better. I’ve been doing this a long time. But I still let the vibe of the trip — beachy, sunny, soft-life energy — talk me out of packing for what was actually on the forecast.
What Came Out of My Suitcase
This was the lineup:
- 4 dresses (3 sundresses)
- 3 shorts
- 3 long lightweight pants
- 5 tanks/camis
- 1 short sleeved tee
- 2 long sleeved tees
- 2 long sleeved button-front shirts
- 1 sweater
- 1 sneakers, 2 flat sandals, 1 dressy sandals
- 1 scarf, 1 long lightweight cardigan
- 3 swimsuits, 1 coverup, 1 straw hat
- 1 woven tote as my day bag
Cute? Yes. Built for a beach trip? Also yes. Built for what we actually got? Not even close. I was rotating that one sweater for half the trip because it was the only real warm layer I’d packed that wasn’t a scarf.
The Redo: What I’m Packing Next Time
If I could repack that suitcase today, here’s what’s going in it instead:
- 3 dresses (2 sundresses) — down one
- 3 shorts
- 2 long lightweight pants — down one
- 1 pair jeans — added, and I needed this the whole time
- 3 tanks/camis — down two
- 1 short sleeved tee
- 3 long sleeved tees — up one
- 2 long sleeved linen shirts — swapped from regular button-fronts
- 3 sweaters/sweatshirts — up two. This is the big one.
- 1 sneakers, 2 flat sandals, 1 dressy sandals
- 1 scarf, 1 long lightweight cardigan
- 2 swimsuits, 1 coverup, 1 straw hat — down one swimsuit
The dresses and swimsuits weren’t wrong to pack. They were just overpacked for the weather I actually had. The fix isn’t “pack less cute” — it’s pack more layers, and lean lightweight-but-warm instead of lightweight-but-thin. Linen over cotton-blend. A jean instead of another pair of breezy pants. Two extra sweaters instead of one and a prayer.
The Bag Swap That Saved My Sanity
That raffia tote? Adorable. Also: useless for a full day on your feet. I swapped it for a travel backpack as my day bag, and it just made more sense — hands free, everything organized, no digging around for my phone while I’m trying to navigate a crowded piazza.
Do you, boo, if the tote is non-negotiable for the photos. But if you’re walking all day, every day? The backpack wins. Every time.
What I’m Doing Differently Next Time
- Check the actual forecast — not the season’s reputation. “Spring in Europe” and “spring at home” are not the same thing.
- Cold-natured? Pack like it. Layers over cute. You can always take a sweater off.
- Swimsuits are a maybe, not a given. Pack for the pool you’ll actually use, not the one you’re hoping for.
- The backpack wins. Tote bags are for vacation photos, not all-day city walking.
So… who else packed for the trip they wanted instead of the trip they were actually taking? Drop a 🧥 in the comments if cold-natured girlies in chilly Rome can relate.
And if you’re planning your own spring Europe trip — this is your sign to check the real forecast before you pack a single sundress.
